Overview

Claude can create fully interactive outputs called artifacts: tools, documents, dashboards, flowcharts, landing pages, and full visual outputs. These render either inline in your conversation or in a dedicated panel alongside it, so you can see the output, interact with it, and ask for changes.

Claude will create artifacts automatically when it thinks they'd be useful, or you can ask for one at any point. If Claude doesn't create an artifact when you expect one, just say "create this as an artifact" and it will.

Interactive Tools

You can ask Claude to build working interactive tools directly in the chat. For example, a monthly budget tracker where you input expenses by category, see a pie chart breakdown, and get a flag when you go over a set limit.

These aren't static mockups. You can input data, charts update in real time, and the tool responds to your interactions. To make changes, just describe what you want:

"Make the chart colours more muted, and add a bar chart underneath that shows month-over-month comparison."

Claude updates the artifact in place. This works for any type of interactive output: calculators, dashboards, data visualisations, forms, even simple games.

Downloadable Files

One thing a lot of people don't realise: Claude can create actual downloadable files, not just text you have to copy and paste.

Ask Claude to create a document and it can produce a real .docx, .pptx, .xlsx, or .pdf file ready to download. For example:

"Create a one-page project brief as a Word document, with sections for project overview, objectives, stakeholders, timeline, risks, and success metrics."

This isn't just a preview. You can download it and open it directly in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or your PDF reader. You can iterate on it the same way as any artifact:

"Add a table for milestones with columns for milestone name, owner, due date, and status."

Then download the updated version and start using it.

Writing and Documents

You can ask Claude to open a document as an artifact and you'll have the document on one side with the chat on the other. This lets you ask for changes while viewing the whole thing, making it much easier to iterate on longer pieces of writing.

Sharing Artifacts

Click the share button on any artifact and you'll get a link. Anyone can view and interact with it, even without a Claude account. They can also remix it, which opens it in their own Claude conversation so they can modify and build on it themselves.

On Team and Enterprise plans, you can share artifacts internally within your organisation.
